2254Hello again everyone and I hope you all are having a wonderful weekend! I finally finished Lost! And OMGOMGOMG I loved it!!! I know that some of you are Lost fans as well, so I will tell you that I was worried about how the series would end. I ended up making it 5 years?? now (something like that) since it ended and still not learning much about it, which is good. I hate getting spoilered, especially about something that I spent years really caring about. But I was worried because the middle seasons lost the thread of the story a bit and even I could see that when it was happening, not just in retrospect. But from the middle of Season 5 to the end of Season 6 it was go.go.go.go and right on target. That’s why I spent several days this week finishing it instead of reviewing 😉 But, I will say that I LOVED it to pieces and I cried like a baby. It would be worth watching again, that’s for sure!

I have a lot to update you about, so let’s get going 🙂

Announcements

take_a_breakFirst off, this week is going to be a slow week for us. We’re taking a week off — sort of. We still have a few guest posts this week and a few reviews and giveaways that were intended to go up, so those will still be on. But it’s a naturally slow week and since we have a large group of reviews we’re working on for the next few weeks, we’re going to use this slow week to try to get a bit ahead.

samhainbannerNow, this is exciting 🙂 We’re now going to be posting reviews from Samhain Publishing! While we often review books that we’ve bought or acquired from authors, we get the bulk of our books from the publisher for review. And until now that included just about all of them except Samhain. The good news about this is that because our books acquired for review take precedence over books that we buy and might decide to review, that means that we’ll be posting a lot more reviews of those Samhain books. First review up this week is Burden by Annmarie McKenna, reviewed by Sadonna.

This Week’s Wrapup

cover3_frontAnyta Sunday stopped by this week with a really great post called “On (Not) Coming Out as a Gay Romance Writer” that generated a lot of really interesting comments. Her book, Taboo for You is available here from Amazon!

03 SurfeitTalya Andor visited for a third time to talk about her third book in the Appetite series from Less Than Three Press, Surfeit For the Senses (all 3 are now on sale!). Every time she visits to talk about these books I have a day or two of severe cravings! But this was a really interesting post talking about the evolution of a multi-course meal in relation to writing a series. Read her post, “Themes of Progression”, here.

CH_BeginningOfKnowledge_cvrThe lovely and talented (and my friend) Anne Brooke visited this week for the first time here at The Armchair Reader! Her post, “Erotica or How to be Fully Human” generated a lot of interest and I love the insight that she has into writing about sex! Check it out and get her book The Beginning of Knowledge from Wilde City Press here. Or, read my review here.

CH_TruckerFucker_100dpi_cvrBarry Lowe was here to talk about why he writes the erotica he does and I really liked seeing his views on his own work (that I’m addicted to, which I said in my review). This is Barry’s first time at The Armchair Reader and you still have a chance to win Trucker Fucker by commenting in the post! Ends tonight at Midnight! Buy Trucker Fucker here at Wilde City Press.

The other two stops were at Joyfully Jay and Book Reviews and More by Kathy. At TAR, they answered a whole group of random art questions and talked about their characters and their feelings about art. It’s a great tour, so check our their post here and make sure to check out the others as well!

dance only for meAnd last this week in a full week of guest posts and visits from authors, Megan Derr stopped by to talk about her new release in the Dance with the Devil series (one of my all time favorites!), Dance Only for Me,talking about the origins of the series in her post, “How Did We Get Here”. BarryLowe_author_p_lr-210x315The two questions I’m often asked by friends and strangers alike are: when did I start writing and, more especially, why I write about sex – more often the term they use is ‘filth.’

The first question is easy. I began writing fiction in sixth class at school. I was twelve and wrote in pen and ink in an old exercise book. The story was about a teenage detective called The Count. My sympathetic teacher allowed me to read a chapter in front of the class every few days for as long as The Count’s adventures continued. Unfortunately, I no longer have those precious school books of my early scribblings influenced by my reading of Enid Blyton’s Secret Seven series among others.

The second part of that question has a moral component, for the subtext from most questioners is that writing about sex is not quite respectable and writing about gay sex is even less so. In fact, I’ve discovered from experience that writing about gay men, whether it be erotica or romance, even without the conjoining of genitalia, it’s considered writing about ‘sex.’ I’ve even had a few acquaintances ask me ‘When are you going to write something nice?’

By their definition of ‘nice,’ the simple answer is never.

Up until a little over three years ago my writing was of the journalistic/critic variety with the odd foray into erotica anthologies. Plus excursions into the dramatic. I penned a one-man play about Joey Stefano which was seen all over the world, plus a number of smutty gay sex comedies, and a film script, Violet’s Visit.

I enjoy writing about sex – gay sex – and not in that agonizing way of men fretting over coming out. Most of my men are out and proud to start with. Their problems are not usually of closetedness but are caused by an oppressive society.

Three years ago I discovered eBooks and the seductive world of m/m romance although the majority of my work cannot be confined within the parameters of the ‘official’ m/m romance paradigm. Claudia of loveyoudivine Alterotica, my publisher for whom I churned out short erotic romance weekly over thirty-six months before illness forced the company to close, encouraged me to write what my heart, and more importantly my groin, loved. Since loveyoudivine closed, most of my works are being released in anthology form by Lydian Press.

I’m not big on HEA or HFN even though I have been in a wonderful relationship with the same man for over forty years. I don’t buy into the Hollywood ideal of fidelity and monogamy; I believe love can encompass all sorts of alternative possibilities. If monogamy works for you, great. Just don’t expect me to write every story about it. There are too many untold stories out there, from gay cuckolding through water sports, daddy role playing, and horny space aliens for me to be happily confined in one genre.

Sometimes my imagination can get a little ‘extreme’ although one reader’s extreme is another reader’s vanilla. Trucker Fucker, recently released by Wilde City Press is an example of what many readers would consider flaming hot and way over the top. The sex is unrelenting, brutal and, for most parts, deliciously sleazy. How you react to it will depend on what gets your juices going. I’m a gay man who came of age in another era: the 1960s. And I came as often as I could, standing in and around public toilets or surf club changing rooms as they were the only place I knew to find men who wanted other men.

I graduated later to bars, saunas and coffee lounges but not before I’d met my share of sluts, nuts, and married men. Sex is just another appetite like eating and sleeping. Like eating, it can be a fast food takeaway for instant gratification or it can be a gourmet meal to be savored. Quite frankly, I like both.

BLURB

Jez Hereford is the biggest bull mother trucker that hauls ass up and down the east coast until the cops book him for drug possession—he keeps to schedule with the help of speed. The bleeding liberal judge gives him a choice: his license for six months or play mentor to a street feral who confesses a passion for trucks. But Jez is about to learn it’s not trucks the feral craves, but what the big rig drivers have between their legs.

Atom’s predilection for what big burly men have between their legs threatens Jez’s peace of mind until Atom uses his sexual prowess on highway cops. But what will he do when he’s threatened by a mob of horny bikers?

REVIEW

I have to admit, I have a bit of an addiction to Barry Lowe erotica stories. I suppose… it’s my secret guilty pleasure. Barry Lowe writes the dirtiest, the raunchiest, the sometimes nastiest erotica and very often his stories seem to have a cheating kink. This one doesn’t, thankfully, because I swear I’m masochistic about those. I want to read them even though they tend to bother me. I don’t know what’s wrong with me!

But I recently noticed that the place Barry Lowe used to publish, loveyoudivine alterotica, has seemed to shut it’s doors. Normally I hear about these kinds of things (love the gossip!) but I’ve been out of the loop lately. So I have no idea why they’ve disappeared, but all of Barry’s stories with them (which have to be over 100) have disappeared as well, even from Amazon (except in print format, if you really want them). So I was really happy to see that Barry was now publishing with Wilde City Press. And I knew that I had to read this new short story, especially with a name like Trucker Fucker. That promises to be dirty!

Read the blurb. This author and this story is less about if you want to read what it’s about and more about if you like the style of writing or not. So, read the blurb. It’s pretty obvious that the story is full of sex and raunchiness and that the writing displays this, although thankfully Barry tends to keep the numerous euphemisms to a bare minimum (no 100 slightly different repeats of fuck rod). Nevertheless, there is a bare-bones plot here. Jez is a trucker that is caught with speed (something all the truckers do to stay awake on long hauls) and the judge offers him a deal instead of jail time — for six months, Jez has to chaperone and mentor a young guy named Atom who got caught tagging his art all over town and whom the judge says showed an interest in trucking. To his mistake, Atom actually replied to his question of what he was interested in, Truckerrs. Jez finds that out when not an hour into their first drive Atom is trying to suck his cock. He makes no mistake about it and loves being called a slut. But no matter how many times he sneaks away and comes back from other trucks at their stops smelling of cum and looked pleasantly mussed, Jez holds out. He’s straight, he reminds himself.

it isn’t until they spend more time together that Jez starts to care about Atom, looking out for him when he’s being hounded by groups of men looking for action. And no matter how much he tries, no matter how many guys are chasing Atom down like sex zombies, no matter how underhanded they are in trying to get Atom to themselves, Jez can’t help but be aroused watching Atom love it all and want some of Atom himself.

If you made it through that, then you might actually like this story! Or you’re repulsed 😉 Either way, this story is FULL of sex, one on one, blowjobs, gangbangs, spit-roasting, blackmail by cops for a gangbang in the station… you’ll be entertained, for sure.

This is the reason that I like reading Barry’s stories. I go into them almost laughing at how ridiculous Barry has made this story and then I start to get pulled into it and by the time I’m finished I actually found it pretty hot. I’m not ashamed to admit it.

But, this is for pretty hardcore erotica readers! I had to add some pretty interesting tags for this one, LOL.
